Boat Club or Boat Ownership? Testing Lake Murray First
Owning a boat on Lake Murray typically runs $5,000-$15,000+ a year once you count maintenance, insurance, storage, and fuel, on top of the purchase price. For out-of-state buyers especially, I usually recommend testing the lifestyle through a boat club first.

Clubs like Freedom Boat Club and Carefree Boats give you access to a full fleet: a tri-toon for a sunset cruise, a center console for fishing, a surf boat for watersports, without carrying the maintenance or insurance yourself. Many memberships also give you reciprocal access at 350+ locations nationally, including Charleston and Hilton Head, so the membership works even when you're not on Lake Murray.
If you'd rather try before joining a club, day-use rental outfits like Lake Murray Boat Rentals, Better Boating, and Lazy Waves rent by the day, and 50/50 Watersports focuses specifically on high-performance tow boats. For a guided introduction to the lake's layout, history, and best real estate, Lake Murray Boat Tours and Captain Hook Tours both run captain-led tours.
Once you know how you'll use the water, the neighborhood guide breaks down which side of the lake fits that best.
